Building a Custom ASP.NET Membership Provider
The Provider model allows you to splice your own code into what would normally be a system path by creating a custom class and wiring up the config file. Membership is a concept that tracks users and passwords. The SQL Membership Provider stores all the user and password information in database tables; there’s no option for using SQL Server Logins. Jeff will build a basic SQL Login Membership Provider that allows users to log in, and even generates a connection string with their credentials.
